Press review - Jean-Claude Juncker an his opinion about Brexit
Good morning Mr Wartner, good morning
classmates, welcome to my press review.
I was reading an article the
other day in the online edition of „BBC“ news and it talks about the Brexit
process and that Jean-Claude Juncker has had enough. For all of you who do not
know immediately who he is: Jean-Claude Juncker is a Luxembourg politician,
serving as president of the European Comission from 2014 until now. He served
as the 23rd Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 1995 to
2013, and was also the Minister for Finances from
1989 to 2009. Jean-Claude Juncker is also very famous for extravagant
pronouncements and gestures like kissing EU leaders on the foreheard or
playfully slapping their face.
I thought you might be interested
because everyone of you has heard about the Brexit process and knows how long
it already takes. I am sure that it is an interesting topic to get to know more
about Mr Junckers opinion about Brexit.
Basically what it says is that Mr
Juncker thought that the Brexit process would be completed by the end of
January, as Boris Johnson claims. He thinks, that the Brexit process has gone
on too long already.
The auther mentions that Mr
Juncker knows that Mr Trump does not like the EU as a strong concept and he
agrees and justify that he is very British.
The decision whether or not to re-start exit negotiations
with the UK would fall primarily to EU national leaders in Berlin, Paris and
beyond. The European Commission negotiates Brexit on their behalf.
Despite his complaint about the protracted
Brexit process, Mr Juncker refused to accept that the EU shared at least some
of the blame. In his opinion there was no point pontificating on whether
Brexit could have been done and dusted ages ago if the Irish border issue had
not been front and centre of divorce talks.
It is also said that Mr Junckers implication
is that the EU couldn't and wouldn't have done it any other way.
It is also mentioned in the text that the European Commission
president said they had found a new way in renegotiations to come up with
exactly the same result as the original backstop. In practical terms, if not
legally speaking, under Mr Johnson's deal, Northern Ireland will remain part of
the EU's customs union after Brexit.
During his five years in office, Jean-Claude Juncker has seen some
EU crisis like the migration crisis and the Greek debt crisis.
However, the Brexit will be the largest process in the European
Union. What surprised me most was when asking him, if he will stay till the end
of the Brexit process, he answered that he has had enough.
As for me I am curious when the
end of Brexit will be. In my mind matters like that may take such a long time,
but this is exaggerated.
What do you think about the Brexit
process and when do you think will there be an end?
Thank you for your attention.
