Hey everyone,
in our last
English lesson we were talking about AFS. For everyone who doesn’t know what AFS is
and what it stands for should read my blog entry. I’ll give you some
pieces of information now.
A lot of
students think about participating in an exchange program. But most of them
aren’t sure, if it is the right thing for them.
AFS means
American Field Service and it offers students all over the world a year abroad.
The most
asked questions for students who would like to go abroad are:
Will I be able to attend classes if I do not
know the language well?
At first it
is a little bit difficult and hard, but after a few weeks most of the exchange
students feel comfortable in the new school environment.
Will I get a report for my classes abroad?
The
exchange students will normally get a list from the host school with all the classes
they have attended, which is also signed by them.
Who will my host family be? How does a life
look like at host families?
Host
families are carefully chosen by the organisation. It is important to know,
that the host families don’t get paid for taking in a foreign student. But they
do it with pleasure, because they would like to share their community and
culture.
Host families
can have children the same age, younger, older or no children. The families
live in all kind of places, in big cities, suburbs, small town or on farms.
The host families will treat the exchange student as a member of the family and not as a
guest. They also should do chores around the house.
What happens if I don’t like my host family?
If an
exchange student has special wishes concerning smoking, non-smoking, pets or
vegetarian food, they must be already mentioned on the application form.
If the host
family isn’t getting well with the exchange student, experienced AFS staff can help to
resolve communication problems or other misunderstandings. If it is really
necessary, students will be moved into a new family.
Can I also pursue my special interests in the
host countries?
Yes, of
course. Most of the activities are different all over the world. If you spend a
year abroad, you get another aspect of music, sports, art and other activities.
If you have
the possibility to spend a year abroad you should take it. You can make a lot of
new experiences. If you are interested in, you can visit the website of AFS.

My opinion:
In my mind,
it would be a great experience to do a year abroad, but I don’t know when. At
first I would like to finish school and maybe after that. I would really like
to do it. I think, that you’ll get lots of information about their culture. You
also learn the language very well there and you see how People live in
other countries. You learn about their body language, their eating habits,
school life and how they spend their freetime. I don’t know where to go, if I
go abroad. I think I wouldn’t go to a big city, I think it is more comfortable
to spend it in an unknown small town.
What do you
think about a year abroad? Tell me.
Yours,
Kristina
